Hemorrhoids are vascular structures which are a part of the anal canal. It is their function to control and regulate stool movements. Hemorrhoidal disease occurs when the hemorrhoids swell. There are two types of hemorrhoids, internal and external. The internal type does not cause much pain but leads to internal bleeding. The external type of hemorrhoid hurts the patient a lot and also causes swelling of the anus or back. The exact reason of this medical ailment is yet to be discovered, however it is a well known fact that constipation plays a key role in the growth of this condition. There are several home remedies for hemorrhoids which make the pain and suffering bearable. Some of these tips are listed below:
Buy an over-the-counter hemorrhoid cream which contains hydrocortisone. Apply it regularly over your swelling to see the change. You can also buy pads which contain witch hazel. This is another product which acts as a soothing and numbing agent. It lessens pain and irritation.
Soak in sitz bath
A sitz bath can be bought at any drugstore. Buy one which fits over your toilet. Heat water till it becomes lukewarm; pour it into the sitz bath placed on your toilet. Soak your anal area in it for 10-15 minutes to reduce the pain.
Keep your anal area clean
Shower or bathe daily to maintain personal hygiene. You can also keep the area around your anus clean this way. Clean it gently and use warm water. Do not use soap as it might increase the problem and cause more pain. Wipe it dry. Avoid use of perfumed wipes and alcohol based wipes. Use a hairdryer to dry the area after bathing.
Do not use toilet paper
Toilet paper is harsh to the soft and sensitive skin. It might increase the pain and pressure resulting in internal bleeding. Use baby wipes or moist towelettes. You can even use wet toilet paper if you cannot get anything else. Do not buy any products which are alcohol or perfume based. These chemicals are not good for the skin of this area.
Apply ice packs
This is one of the most effective home remedies for hemorrhoids. Your anal area becomes very sensitive and needs to be taken care of so as to avoid surgery. Application of ice pack on a regular basis reduces the pain to some extent. Individuals are able to make it through the day without having to take pain killers to alleviate the pain.
You should rest for a day or two when the pain increases. It relieves some of the pressure from inflamed and irritated veins. Sleep on your stomach with a pillow under your hips to assist in the reduction of swelling of the hemorrhoids. Do not sit or stand for a long time as it irritates the hemorrhoids. If you need to sit for long hours use a cushion to make the surface soft. Also abstain from lifting heavy objects as the pressure will in turn affect the hemorrhoids.
