The Cinnamon tree is a miniature form of herbal spicy species, which belongs to the Cinnamomum family. It is mostly used for preparing sweet & spicy foods. It origins date back to earlier times than 2000 BC. Four different types of this species were identified at that time. The forms were named as Cassia herb, True Cinnamon herb, Serichatum herb and Malobathrum herb. Each of the species had its origin from different corners of the world. For example the Cassia herbal tree originated from Africa and the Arabic regions. True Cinnamon herbal tree was from Srilanka and Malobathrum originated from the northern part of India and the Serichatum herbal tree came from Chinese origin.

The typical Cinnamon tree that we are referring to here can be grown easily within your home interiors. You can choose to plant in your garden, portico or even a pot. It is partial tropical tree, growing in surplus at a temperature below 40 degrees. The Indoor species can grow up to a height of 5 Feet whereas the open air grown species can grow up to 30 feet in height.

The main part of the tree is its bark. It can be used after two years of its growth. Its leaves are used as aromatic agents as well as for chewing to get healthy. Its fruits are dark purple colored in nature. The newly sprouting leaves are usually dark red in color and they turn into bright green at a later stage. The fruits originate from a whitish colored flower.

Growing the Cinnamon tree at home

You will be able to grow this tree right from the seed level, by grafting process or from the cuttings. However, the spreading/propagation process of this tree happens mainly though seeds, which is its natural form.

Growing conditions required

Though the tree is said to grow with minimum care in any sub tropical type of climate, if you are planning to grow it at home, you will need to maintain certain particular environmental conditions.

Soil Conditions: It needs to be drained very well. The most recommended type is a fine combination of sand, soil and glassy bead like objects. This condition is ideal for optimum level of water drainage also.

Lighting: If you are planning to grow the tree in doors, then it is better to expose the growing plant in the direction of south. Choose a location, which is every close to the window for allowing maximum sun light. If you are growing it in the courtyard or terrace in a plant, it is a great idea.

If you are planning to plant it out doors; for example in your house open garden, then it is preferable to expose the tree to direct sun light. Make sure that it gets at least 12 hours of direct sun light and the soil conditions are relatively dry in nature, except for the optimum water quantity required for its growth.

Watering the plant: Once you have watered the plant, make sure that the next watering is not done until the top soil has dried to an extent of at least 1.5” – 2”. It is recommended that you check this parameter accurately before re watering; otherwise the plant may decay half way through.

Fertilizing the tree: Organic fertilizers are supposed to be the best known ones. Most of the experienced cinnamon tree growers recommend the droppings of chickens, rabbit or goats, since they are supposed to contain high levels of nitrogen content. It is also recommended that the droppings from garden rearing animals be used for composting the fertilizer before being used.

The other type of fertilizer which can be sued effectively is the decomposed leaves from other trees, including that of Cinnamon tree itself. If you are planning to use processed fertilizers, make sure that it is made of Urea containing 40%-42% of Nitrogen, rock phosphate with 27%-28% of phosphorous Pent oxide and potash Muriate with 59%-60% of potassium oxide.

Possible diseases/infections:

  • Development of white roots: This is usually caused due to Mycelia, which is a white colored fungus that is common to Cinnamon tree species. It is possible to prevent this disease right at the initial stage of planting. Pack its roots with sulfur powder.
  • Brown spots: They usually appear on the barks of young plants while growing. It can be cured by applying a chemical mix of Bordeaux+ any anti fungal agent which is based on copper.
  • Pests: Commonly known pests are shoot borer pest, mites, Cinnamon butter fly etc. One of the most powerful insecticides used could be Chloro phyrophos insecticide.

The Cinnamon tree bark is the primary product which is extensively sued at homes. You will be able to use its bark powder as a tasty ingredient in sweets as well as spices based foods. Moreover, if you prepare a fine paste out of it, you will be able to use it as an effective anti premature ejaculation agent.
