The multiple ways to grow and harvest your ginseng

Growing Ginseng could be a simple or a complex process, depending on the size and quantity of plants you wish to have. If you are growing it within your home/bonsai-garden for your personal use, then it is a simple process. On the other hand if you wish to grow it commercially, it could well be a complex process.

  • You will need large acres of land located in shady and cool climate
  • You will require a government-license to grow.
  • You will need proper knowledge about its characteristics, fertilizers to be used, nature and type of pesticides required, weed-removal methods and timing etc.

If you are growing it in a large scale and from its seeds, you will need to wait for at least 4-years. There are many other farming-methods too by which you will be able to grow it by planting roots. This will take relatively shorter duration of time. Let us take a look at how you can grow the Ginseng-plants

Planting the Ginseng-seeds

_The multiple ways to grow and harvest your ginsengThe soil in which you are planning to grow the seeds has to be moist. For this you can select drained-loamy-soil. Mix it with Organic fertilizers at the top-layer. It should make up at least 10% of the top-most-layer. The recommended soil ph is between 5.5 and 7. You can raise the soil bed to a height of 30-35cm and make it slope-like, to get better results. Provide maximum shading on the land, preferably about 80%-85%. The climatic-temperature needs to be maintained between 20C to 25C. The moisture-levels of soil need to be maintained consistently, throughout the long months, till the plants are ready for harvesting. If your land is located at a place where it receives about 20”-30”of rain-fall in a year, it is said to be the most ideal-condition. Now you need to consistently monitor the fertilizing needs. You will be able to find these details online.

how to use it

If you are growing ginseng at home, it could be used for medicinal-purposes. You can also prepare tea from its leaves. The berry-extract can be used extensively for reducing blood-glucose levels to a large extent. Dry the pulp and juice after separating the seeds. Now you can powder the dried-part and use it for making tea. This is highly beneficial in purifying your blood and boosting your romantic-moods also!

How long ?

If you use the right kind of soil, watering and fertilizing-techniques, it could take about 3 years to make your plant reach the stage of harvesting. There are two options, which are available for growing. You could plant the roots or seeds. Root-planting is said to be more expensive. If you plan to go for seed-planting, you need to buy stratified-seeds.

What is stratification?

It is a method by which you germinate the ginseng-seeds before actually planting them. In the natural- environments, it takes about 20-21 months for the seeds to stratify. If you wish to do it artificially, it may take about 11-12 months.

How to stratify the ginseng-seeds

For that you need to make a stratification-box of rectangular-shape with its top and bottom covered with metal-mesh. Select a mesh-type, which allows air to pass through, but retains sand within the box. Make a thick layer of sand at the bottom of the box. Place a single row of Ginseng-seeds on it. Now you need to pour another layer of sand on it. Then place another layer of seeds and top it with one more layer of sand. Repeat the process until you have used all your seeds. Make sure that the top-most layer is sand.

Now close the box with the mesh-top and seal it tight. Now go to the piece of land where you plan to grow it. Dig a hole which can accommodate your box and have about 3”-4” of space above it. Now burry the box and mark the place. If you check the box after about 11-12 months, you will find that the seeds are germinated and ready to be planted.
